Massachusetts tax accountant for notices and late returns

You have a letter from the IRS or the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR), or a return you never filed. Our team sorts it out and keeps your next filing on schedule.

  • We read the notice first. We tell you what the agency wants and the date it wants it by.

  • Planning after the fix. Once we resolve a notice, we adjust your estimates or withholding to cover next year's tax.

  • Help after April. We take tax questions and notices after the filing deadline too.

Tax problems we handle for Massachusetts filers

As your Massachusetts tax accountant, we take the problem off your desk.

  1. A notice from the IRS or the DOR, such as a CP2000, a CP504, an audit letter or a Notice of Intent to Assess.

We check it against your return and answer it by the response date on the letter.

  2. Returns you never filed.

We prepare each missing federal and Massachusetts return and show you what you owe before we file.

  3. A mistake on a return you filed.

We amend the federal return on Form 1040-X and the Massachusetts return through MassTaxConnect or a revised Form 1 or Form 1-NR/PY marked as amended.

  4. An audit result you disagree with.

We file Form DR-1 within 30 days of a Notice of Intent to Assess to request a conference, or Form ABT after the DOR assesses the tax.

  5. A balance you cannot pay in full.

We set up a DOR payment agreement, up to 36 months on $10,000 or less, with larger balances arranged by phone at the DOR's discretion. On federal tax, we set up an IRS long-term payment plan on $50,000 or less once you have filed every required return. A CP504 warns that the IRS may take your state tax refund; the IRS starts your 30-day window to appeal a levy with the Final Notice, LT11 or Letter 1058.

  6. Penalties on a late return or payment.

Since summer 2026 the IRS applies Automatic Exemption from Penalty during processing when you filed and paid on time for the prior three years. Where it does not apply, we request relief for reasonable cause from the IRS or the DOR.

Working in Massachusetts while living in another state

Nonresidents report only Massachusetts source income on Form 1-NR/PY. If you worked inside and outside Massachusetts and do not know the exact Massachusetts amount, we apportion it on the form's worksheet, such as by working days.

We set up the ratio each year and prepare any return your home state requires.

What to have ready when you get a tax notice

  • A complete copy of the notice or letter.

  • The tax return the notice refers to.

  • Proof of any payments you made for that year.

  • A signed power of attorney: Form 2848 for the IRS and Form M-2848 for the DOR.

We send you both power of attorney forms to sign. Once you sign Form M-2848, the DOR shares your tax information with us.

Send us the letter and the return it refers to. We reply with what the agency wants, the date, and a fixed quote to handle it.

What affects the cost of tax notice help

We quote once we have read the notice.

  • Notice type.

A simple adjustment takes less work than an audit.

  • Tax years.

We price each year the notice covers.

  • Records.

Missing statements mean we rebuild the numbers first.

  • Next step.

We quote an amended return or an appeal as its own filing.

We explain the quote before any work starts.

“Their expertise was evident and they helped me to avoid a tax penalty.”
